Created in collaboration with choreographer Jenna Pollack and 26 dancers from Hubbard Street’s Professional Program, In the Red transformed a stairwell at the University of Chicago into a moving installation exploring the divide between wealth and poverty.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Audience members were brought to the 10th floor in small groups and welcomed by a selection of E.LEE paintings before beginning their descent through the performance. As they moved downward, the environment became progressively darker and more chaotic. The dancers, costumes, paintings, and movement shifted with the changing conditions, creating a physical progression from wealth and abundance toward scarcity and desperation.

Rather than simply watching the performance, the audience moved through it, experiencing the changing conditions of the work with their own bodies.

All performances sold out, with more than 400 people experiencing the installation.
