The inspiration for this piece is a brilliant Greg Capullo Zero Year cover. It really resinated with me as I was going through a significant transition at the time. I was needing to honestly look at myself and examine the meaning of my life, and possibly change directions from the path I had been on for over 10 years. So this piece only felt right being quite large... 5ft by 3ft. I wanted to piece together a collection of old distressed scrap wood to create an imperfect surface for the canvas. The wood has a warmth and life of it's own that was definitely needed, and the different levels and surfaces illustrated the distorted view we have of ourselves. The eyes are black and empty with no soul behind them, and the mask is fading away with the questioning of it's identity and purpose.
"Reflection" was an important piece to create because I believe identity and purpose are big topics with which we all have to wrestle. I hope seeing this can remind people that they're not alone in their confusion. These 15 prints allow me to open that door a few more times to a few more people.
